Emi Clock User Manual
Emi Clock is an analog clock featuring the office worker Emi and her collection of costumes. It requires watchOS 10 or later.
1. Basic Controls and Display Settings
Using the clock and opening settings
- Open Emi Clock to display the clock.
- Tap the gear at the top right of the clock to open Settings. It hides after about three seconds without interaction; tap the clock to reveal it again. It stays visible while VoiceOver is enabled.
- Change the costume or display options, then use the standard close button or swipe down to dismiss the settings sheet and return to the clock.
Changes are saved automatically; there is no Save button. Settings are stored separately on each device and do not sync with other devices.
Lists show a checkmark beside the current choice. Selecting any item, including that choice again, closes the list. Changes take effect immediately.
Settings shows a Credits section, ordered watchOS version, X11 version, then original artwork. On Apple Watch, the wrist-down pause explanation appears below Manual in Instructions.
Free basic features
There is no time limit for free features. Unlock All Features enables the available additional features.
| Category | Available for free |
|---|---|
| Costumes | Casual suit and Clerk uniform. Hourly changes cycle through these two costumes only. Minute-by-minute animation remains available. Reverse Pose stays off |
| Clock | Picture (Blue), second hand on, Color, Black background, and the Apple Watch’s time zone are fixed. |
| Sound and notifications (Watch) | Startup sound and Test are available. Hourly chime, half-hour chime, and alarm stay off |
| Information | Off, Today’s Date, and Battery in each corner. The date’s day/night symbol is included where local data is available |
| Resolution | Original images; High-Resolution Images stays off |
| Instructions and credits | No restrictions on viewing |
Paid choices remain visible but disabled, with a lock icon. Fixed switches cannot be changed. If purchase access can no longer be verified, the app returns to basic features and stops paid notifications. Saved paid preferences are preserved and become effective again after restoration. Changes you make to available basic preferences are saved.
For consideration of people who may see the screen, some right-facing costumes from the original X11 version use a horizontally mirrored left-facing image. The original See-through dress has been removed from the watchOS version.
In-App Purchases
In-App Purchases appears above Privacy Policy.
In Settings, choose In-App Purchases → Unlock All Features to start a one-time purchase. Check the price and confirm the purchase in the App Store confirmation sheet. This is not a subscription.
If you purchased before, use the same Apple Account. Access is checked automatically at launch and when you return to the app. Tapping Unlock All Features checks your existing purchase first. Valid access is restored with a confirmation message, without a new purchase. This check may require authentication. If it fails, no purchase is started; you can try again.
One full-unlock purchase is shared across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch using the same Apple Account. If access has not appeared yet, reopen the app or authenticate and restore through Unlock All Features. Sharing purchase access is separate from syncing clock settings or background photos.
The entire In-App Purchases section disappears when your purchase is verified. If access cannot be verified or restored, additional features are disabled and the In-App Purchases section with its Unlock All Features row reappears. Your clock settings are preserved. Purchases awaiting approval take effect after approval. Cancellation or a connection error is not treated as a completed purchase.
Purchase recovery: Tap Unlock All Features to check access and synchronize previous purchases when needed. Existing purchases are restored with confirmation; otherwise, the purchase flow opens. If synchronization or verification fails or is cancelled, no purchase starts. No long press is required.
Costumes
Open Settings → Costumes.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Costume | Choose from the available costumes. |
| Hourly character change | Cycle through costumes every hour. |
| Animate Character | Change Emi’s pose every minute. |
| Reverse Pose | Reverse the direction Emi faces. |
The initial costume is Casual suit. Hourly character change is off, Animate Character is on, and Reverse Pose is off by default. Automatic costume changes account for the time that passed while the app was inactive.
When the second hand is enabled and the app is active, Emi briefly narrows horizontally around pose or costume changes. This animation is disabled when Reduce Motion is enabled on the device.
Clock display
Open Settings → Clock.
| Setting | Options and behavior |
|---|---|
| Face | Picture (Blue), Picture (Red), or Reverse. On the Reverse face, the hands move in the opposite direction. |
| Display second hand | Show or hide the second hand. On by default. |
| Display Color | Color, Grayscale, 4-Level Grayscale, or Monochrome. Color is the default. |
| Background | Black or White. Black is the default. |
| Time Zone | Use the device’s time zone or select a region from the list. |
The initial face is always Picture (Blue), regardless of the time of day. It stays blue in free mode; other faces are available after purchase.
The default time zone is Same as Apple Watch. Changing it affects the clock hands, the date and time in the information display, chimes, and the alarm.
Time zones use country names, with a representative city when a country has multiple zones.
Information in the four corners
Open Settings → Information, select Top Left, Top Right, Bottom Left, or Bottom Right, and choose the content. Selecting the already selected option also closes the list. Use the standard Back button to return without changing the selection.
| Content | Display |
|---|---|
| Off | Nothing. All four corners are off by default. |
| Today’s Date | A date such as WED 16. Shows a standard weather symbol for local conditions and day/night. Clear or partly cloudy conditions use the sun by day and a crescent moon at night; clouds, rain, snow, thunderstorms, fog, and other conditions use their appropriate symbols. Some symbols omit the sun or moon. |
| Digital Time | 24-hour HH:MM time. |
| Temperature | Current temperature, forecast daily low/high, and an arc gauge. Uses the device’s temperature preference, shown as ℃ or ℉. |
| Weather | Time until the next weather change, precipitation probability or a condition name, and the future weather symbol. |
| Battery | Battery percentage and an arc gauge. |
Text follows the clock’s circumference and symbols remain horizontal in the corners. Each corner can be configured independently, including repeated content. All date/time labels update together.
In Color mode, Sunday’s weekday is red and Saturday’s is blue. Temperature, battery numbers, and corner symbols are blue; the temperature gauge runs from cool to warm colors. Other display modes use black or white to suit the background. No holiday flag is shown. The Digital Time day/night symbol follows your current location, independently of the clock’s time zone.
Local weather, temperature, and forecasts
Choose Today’s Date, Digital Time, Temperature, or Weather and allow location access. An internet connection is also required. Weather follows your current location; changing the clock’s time zone does not select that region’s weather.
Data is fetched about every ten minutes while the clock is active. When data is unavailable or over 30 minutes old, the date’s day/night symbol is hidden, Digital Time shows only the time without a symbol, and Temperature and Weather show “--”. An unavailable battery reading shows “--%”.
If battery reading is temporarily unavailable, the last reading is retained for up to 15 minutes. Before the first valid reading or after 15 minutes without one, --% is shown. Corner information does not fade during updates.
Forecast examples are “14h: 20%” for precipitation and “14h: Clear” for clear weather. The percentage is the precipitation probability at that forecast time; remaining time is rounded up to whole hours and refreshed each minute. If no change is found within the available forecast, the current weather symbol and “No change” appear. This does not predict conditions beyond that forecast range. A day/night transition alone is not a weather change.
Image resolution
Open Settings → Resolution → High-Resolution Images. Turn this off for the original pixel artwork, or on for smoothly enlarged images. It is off by default.
Language and accessibility
The app supports Japanese, English, German, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Italian. It uses the first preferred language, falling back to English for unsupported languages. An explicit Chinese script takes priority; otherwise Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao use Traditional Chinese, while other regions and Chinese without a region use Simplified Chinese. Portuguese uses the Brazilian edition. Dates and weekdays follow the same policy. There is no language selector inside the app.
With VoiceOver enabled, touching the clock reads the current time, date and weekday, current weather, upcoming forecast, today’s high and low temperatures, current temperature, and battery level, in that order, regardless of corner settings. Unavailable information, including its label, is skipped. You can enable VoiceOver on Apple Watch in Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver. The time is spoken in 24-hour form with explicit hours and minutes; seconds are included when the second hand is enabled and the clock is active. Temperatures use the device’s temperature unit and are spoken as a number and degrees, without saying Celsius or Fahrenheit.
2. Features and Everyday Use
App behavior and battery use
Emi Clock is a standalone app and does not require installation of the iPhone app. Tap the gear at the top right of the clock to open Settings. It hides after about three seconds without interaction; tap the clock to reveal it again. It stays visible while VoiceOver is enabled. Use the standard close button or swipe down to dismiss the settings sheet and return to the clock.
Because Emi Clock runs as an app, it may consume more battery power than a built-in watch face. Actual consumption varies with usage time, display settings, weather data retrieval, and other conditions.
The second hand and pose animation pause when your wrist is down and the display dims, or when the app becomes inactive. Always On availability and how long the app stays on screen depend on the device model and the operating system’s settings and behavior.
When the app becomes inactive, the hour and minute hands do not move back from their last active positions; they then advance as the OS updates the display.
If Wrist Flick is turned on in Settings → Gestures on Apple Watch, quickly turning your wrist away from you and back closes the Emi Clock screen and returns to the built-in watch face. If you do not want this behavior, turn off Wrist Flick under Gestures.
Note on status indicators
Emi Clock runs as an app rather than a built-in watch face, so its clock screen cannot show the same indicators at the top for Focus modes such as Do Not Disturb or Sleep, an active system timer, or the red dot for unread notifications. This is a limitation of the features watchOS makes available to apps. Check these states on the built-in watch face, in Control Center or Notification Center, or in the Timers app, as appropriate.
Recommended settings to keep the app visible longer
Adjust the following options in the device’s Settings app. Names and available options may differ by watchOS version and device model.
Set Return to Clock to After 1 hour
- Open the device’s Settings app → General → Return to Clock.
- Scroll down and select Emi Clock.
- Select Custom, then choose After 1 hour.
If you do not use an app-specific setting, choose After 1 hour in the general Return to Clock settings and make sure Emi Clock uses that default. The general setting also applies to other apps.
This delays the return to the standard watch face after sleep. It does not keep the display brightly lit for an hour. You may need to reopen Emi Clock after a period of inactivity or after switching to another app.
watchOS controls how long the app remains visible, so these settings do not guarantee indefinite display. Reopen Emi Clock if the standard watch face appears.
Extend the wake duration
Open Settings → Display & Brightness → Wake Duration and select Wake for 70 Seconds. This gives you more time to view the screen after tapping to wake it. Enable Wake on Wrist Raise to check the clock by raising your wrist. These settings are separate from the Return to Clock delay.
Use Always On on supported models
Open Settings → Display & Brightness → Always On and enable it. Under Show Apps on that screen, allow Emi Clock to be displayed. This option is unavailable on unsupported models. Always On is also unavailable while Low Power Mode or Theater Mode is enabled.
The display dims during Always On operation. In Emi Clock, the second hand and pose animation pause and chimes do not play while your wrist is down. Enabling Always On does not change this behavior. Longer wake durations and Always On use more battery power, so adjust them to balance visibility and battery life.
Startup sound and chimes
Open Settings → Sound and Notifications.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Startup sound | Enable or disable the “Myu!” sound at startup. On by default. |
| Test | Preview the “Myu!” sound. |
| Hourly chime | Play “Myu!” at minute 00 of each hour. Off by default. |
| Half hour chime | Play “Myu!” at minute 30 of each hour. Off by default. |
Chimes play only if the app is active when the scheduled time is reached. They do not play while your wrist is down or while you use another app. Missed chimes are not replayed when you return. Notification permission is not required for chimes.
Turning off Startup sound does not disable chimes; each chime follows its own setting. Audio playback respects device settings, including Silent Mode.
Alarm
- Open Settings → Sound and Notifications and enable Alarm.
- Allow notifications when prompted.
- Set Hour and Minute. Hours use the 24-hour range, 0–23.
- Enable Daily Alarm to repeat every day. For a one-time alarm, turn Daily Alarm off and choose a Date.
You can choose a date from today through 30 days from today. A one-time alarm must be set for a future date and time. Past times are not scheduled, and a message appears in Settings. The alarm is off by default, with Daily Alarm enabled and the time set to 07:00.
You can configure one alarm. Changing its settings replaces the previous scheduled alarm. Turn Alarm off to cancel it.
While the app is active, “Myu!” repeats with a 0.5-second pause after each playback until the alarm screen is closed. Playback stops while inactive and resumes on return if not acknowledged. Closing the alarm, disabling it, or losing purchase access stops playback. Chimes in the same minute are suppressed. Background delivery uses the standard OS notification sound; opening the notification starts the in-app loop. Background notifications do not loop indefinitely, and snooze is unavailable. Audio respects system settings such as Silent Mode.
Reading the manual
Tap Instructions → Manual near the bottom of Settings, before the original credits, to open this manual. It uses the same language as the app. All ten language editions are bundled, so reading does not require a connection.
Scroll vertically with a finger or the Digital Crown. Tables appear as vertically stacked entries. Use the standard close button at the top left to return to Settings. The top bar fades after interaction stops; tap or scroll to reveal it again. It remains visible with VoiceOver.
Original version credits
At the bottom of Settings, open Original Version Credits and select Macintosh Version Staff, Windows 3.1 Version Staff, or X11 Version Staff. Scroll vertically with a finger or the Digital Crown to view the original credit artwork.
Use the standard close button at the top left to return to Settings. The top bar fades after interaction stops; tap or scroll to reveal it again. The close button remains available with VoiceOver. Credits follow Display Color but do not use the High-Resolution Images setting.
Watch face complications
Complications are small displays you can add to a standard watch face. Edit your watch face and assign Emi Clock to a supported complication slot. Available shapes and slots depend on the watch face.
| Shape | Content |
|---|---|
| Circular | Emi |
| Rectangular | Emi, Emi Clock, date, and costume name |
| Inline | Emi and the date |
| Corner | Emi and the date |
Tap a complication to open the clock in Emi Clock. Costumes and display colors follow Emi Clock’s settings, including automatic costume changes. Some watch face rendering modes display the artwork in a single color.
Complications do not use high-resolution images, the second hand, pose animation, or the app’s four-corner information display. The operating system controls updates. If a change is not visible immediately, open Emi Clock to check it. Emi Clock does not replace the standard watch face itself.
CO2 reception, display and the dedicated CO2 widget are available on iOS and iPadOS, and are not supported on Apple Watch.
3. Troubleshooting
| Issue | What to check |
|---|---|
| The clock’s time or date differs from the device | Check Clock → Time Zone and select the option to use the device’s time zone. |
| The second hand or pose animation stops | Check the second-hand and animation settings. They pause when your wrist is down or the app is inactive. Reduce Motion also disables the narrowing animation. |
| The costume changes by itself | Turn off Hourly character change. |
| Chimes do not play | Check the relevant chime setting, Silent Mode, and whether the app was active at the time boundary. Use Test to check sound playback. |
| An alarm does not arrive | Check notification permission, Focus, whether Alarm is enabled, and the time zone. For a one-time alarm, check that its date and time are in the future. Follow any message shown in Settings. |
| An audio or notification error appears | Read the message in Settings and check device settings. Try Test or configure the alarm again. |
| Weather or temperature is missing | Allow location access, check the internet connection, and keep the clock active. |
| Settings do not appear on another device | Settings do not sync between devices. Configure each device separately. |
4. Privacy Policy
Privacy Policy appears before Credits in Settings. On Apple Watch, the bundled text is displayed in the same way as the manual and requires no internet connection. The app’s ten-language selection rules apply, with English used for unsupported languages.
