Emi Clock User Manual
Emi Clock is an analog clock featuring the office worker Emi and her collection of costumes. It requires iPhone with iOS 17 or later, or iPad with iPadOS 17 or later.
1. Basic Controls and Display Settings
Using the clock and opening settings
- Open Emi Clock to display the clock.
- Tap the clock to show a gear at the top right, then tap the gear to open Settings. The gear disappears after about three seconds; tapping the clock again restarts that interval. While VoiceOver is enabled, the gear stays visible and the clock’s accessibility action can open Settings directly.
- Change the costume or display options, then tap Close to return to the clock.
Lists show a checkmark beside the current choice. Selecting any item, including that choice again, closes the list. Changes take effect immediately.
Settings shows Credits in this order: iOS version on iPhone or iPadOS version on iPad, X11 version, then original artwork.
Free basic features
There is no time limit for free features. Unlock All Features enables the available additional features.
| Category | Available for free |
|---|---|
| Costumes | Casual suit and Clerk uniform. Hourly changes cycle through these two costumes only. Minute-by-minute animation remains available. Reverse Pose stays off |
| Clock | Picture (Blue), second hand on, Color, Black background, and the device’s time zone |
| Sound and notifications | Startup sound and Test are available. Hourly chime, half-hour chime, and alarm stay off |
| Information | Off, Today’s Date, and Battery in each corner. The date’s day/night symbol is included where local data is available |
| Resolution | Original images; High-Resolution Images stays off |
| Instructions and credits | No restrictions on viewing |
Paid choices remain visible but disabled, with a lock icon. Fixed switches cannot be changed. If purchase access can no longer be verified, the app returns to basic features and stops paid notifications. Saved paid preferences are preserved and become effective again after restoration. Changes you make to available basic preferences are saved.
For consideration of people who may see the screen, some right-facing costumes from the original X11 version use a horizontally mirrored left-facing image. The original See-through dress has been removed from the iPhone/iPad version.
In-App Purchases
In Settings, choose In-App Purchases → Unlock All Features to start a one-time purchase. Check the price and confirm the purchase in the App Store confirmation sheet. This is not a subscription.
If you purchased before, use the same Apple Account. Access is checked automatically at launch and when you return to the app. Tapping Unlock All Features checks your existing purchase first. Valid access is restored with a confirmation message, without a new purchase. This check may require authentication. If it fails, no purchase is started; you can try again.
One full-unlock purchase is shared across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch using the same Apple Account. If access has not appeared yet, reopen the app or authenticate and restore through Unlock All Features. Sharing purchase access is separate from syncing clock settings or background photos.
The entire In-App Purchases section disappears when your purchase is verified. If access cannot be verified or restored, additional features are disabled and the In-App Purchases section with its Unlock All Features row reappears. Your clock settings are preserved. Purchases awaiting approval take effect after approval. Cancellation or a connection error is not treated as a completed purchase.
Purchase recovery: Tap Unlock All Features to check access and synchronize previous purchases when needed. Existing purchases are restored with confirmation; otherwise, the purchase flow opens. If synchronization or verification fails or is cancelled, no purchase starts. No long press is required.
Costumes
Open Settings → Costumes.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Costume | Choose from the available costumes. |
| Hourly character change | Cycle through costumes every hour. |
| Animate Character | Change Emi’s pose every minute. |
| Reverse Pose | Reverse the direction Emi faces. |
The initial costume is Casual suit. Hourly character change is off, Animate Character is on, and Reverse Pose is off by default. Automatic costume changes account for the time that passed while the app was inactive.
When the second hand is enabled and the app is active, Emi briefly narrows horizontally around pose or costume changes. This animation is disabled when Reduce Motion is enabled on the device.
Clock display
Open Settings → Clock.
| Setting | Options and behavior |
|---|---|
| Face | Picture (Blue), Picture (Red), or Reverse. On the Reverse face, the hands move in the opposite direction. |
| Display second hand | Show or hide the second hand. On by default. |
| Display Color | Color, Grayscale, 4-Level Grayscale, or Monochrome. Color is the default. |
| Background | Black, White, or Photo. Black is the default. |
| Time Zone | Use the device’s time zone or select a region from the list. |
Choose Settings → Clock → Background → Photo → Choose photo to select an image from your photo library. White and Photo require full unlock. The selected photo is saved on this device and remains available after restarting and offline. It is centered and cropped to fill the screen, with slight darkening for readable text. A selected photo appears as the background as soon as it loads. Use photo activates it and closes Settings to return to the clock. Switching to Black or White keeps the photo. Remove photo deletes the saved image, restores the Black or White background selected before using the photo, and closes Settings. Canceling selection or a failed import preserves the previous background. While purchase access is unavailable, the background is Black and the photo is retained. Background photos do not sync to Watch, widgets, or other devices and do not follow system wallpaper changes.
The initial face is always Picture (Blue), regardless of the time of day. It stays blue in free mode; other faces are available after purchase.
The default time zone is Same as device. Changing it affects the clock hands and the date and time in the information display.
Time zones use country names, with a representative city when a country has multiple zones.
Information in the four corners
Open Settings → Information and select Top Left, Top Right, Bottom Left, or Bottom Right. The choices are Off, Today’s Date, Digital Time, Temperature, Weather, and Battery, in that order. All start off. Reselecting the current option also closes the list; use Back to return without a change.
Today’s Date and Digital Time are available on iPhone and iPad. Labels follow the clock’s circumference, showing a date such as WED 16 or 24-hour time. In Color mode, Sunday’s weekday is red and Saturday’s is blue.
On iPhone and iPad, information is placed around the centered clock at its top-left, top-right, bottom-left, and bottom-right corners, in both portrait and landscape.
Battery shows the iPhone or iPad battery percentage and an arc gauge. It refreshes when selected, when the app resumes, and about once per minute while displayed. Unavailable readings show “--%”.
If battery reading is temporarily unavailable, the last reading is retained for up to 15 minutes. Before the first valid reading or after 15 minutes without one, --% is shown. Corner information does not fade during updates.
Selecting Today’s Date, Digital Time, Temperature, or Weather requests When In Use location permission. Once allowed, the clock shows local conditions, day/night, temperature, and forecasts. VoiceOver also enables acquisition. Updates run about every ten minutes while the clock is active; failures retry about once a minute. Weather older than 30 minutes is discarded: Weather and Temperature show “--”, while date and time remain without symbols. Settings → Weather shows status and offers Refresh weather. After denial, Open location settings lets you change permission. Precise Location is not required. If already authorized, the permission prompt does not appear again. Weather Settings distinguishes location status from weather-service and attribution failures. The official Apple Weather mark and Weather data sources appear in Settings → Weather. Sources open in an in-app browser; closing it returns to Settings. They do not appear on the clock screen. Weather locations are not saved, and there is no background acquisition.
Sleep
In Settings, Sleep appears between Widget and Resolution. Turn on Prevent sleep while full screen to prevent automatic locking while the app is active and fills the display on iPhone or iPad. It is off by default and requires full unlock. Split-screen or smaller windows, switching to another app, and loss of purchase access restore normal automatic locking. The preference persists after relaunch. Manual locking with the side button is unaffected. This setting is not available on watchOS.
Image resolution
Open Settings → Resolution → High-Resolution Images. Turn this off for the original pixel artwork, or on for smoothly enlarged images. It is off by default.
Language and accessibility
The app supports Japanese, English, German, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Italian. It uses the first preferred language, falling back to English for unsupported languages. An explicit Chinese script takes priority; otherwise Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao use Traditional Chinese, while other regions and Chinese without a region use Simplified Chinese. Portuguese uses the Brazilian edition. Dates and weekdays follow the same policy. There is no language selector inside the app.
With VoiceOver enabled, touching the clock reads the current time, date, weekday, and available battery level. Battery data is acquired while VoiceOver is enabled, regardless of corner settings. The time uses a 24-hour format with explicit hours and minutes; seconds are included when the second hand is enabled and the clock is active. With location permission and available data, it also reads weather, forecasts, and high, low, and current temperatures. The clock’s accessibility action opens Settings.
2. Using Emi Clock on iPhone and iPad
iPhone and iPad provide the same clock and settings features. There are no additional iPad-only features.
Tap the clock to show a gear at the top right, then tap the gear to open Settings. The gear disappears after about three seconds; tapping the clock again restarts that interval. While VoiceOver is enabled, the gear stays visible and the clock’s accessibility action can open Settings directly. Settings lets you change Costumes, Clock, Sound and Notifications, Information, Widget, Sleep, and Resolution. Tap Close in Settings to return to the clock.
The clock scales to fit the screen. Both iPhone and iPad support portrait and landscape orientations; iPad also supports upside-down portrait orientation.
On iPhone and iPad, Sound and Notifications provides the startup sound, Test, hourly chime, and half-hour chime. Startup sound and Test are free; chimes require full unlock. Startup sound is on by default and chimes are off. The startup sound plays once after launch, without repeating on a normal return. Chimes play only while the app is active in the foreground, including Settings, never while locked or using another app. Silent Mode and volume settings apply. Missed chimes are not replayed on return. Interruptions such as calls and disconnecting headphones stop playback without resuming the interrupted sound. Watch complications remain unsupported on iPhone and iPad. Apple Watch settings cannot be changed from these devices.
Enable Alarm in Sound and Notifications after full unlock. Choose daily repetition or a one-time date, then set the hour and minute. The clock’s selected time zone applies, and past dates are not scheduled. Enabling the alarm requests notification permission for the first time. Launching the app does not show the permission dialog; use Allow notifications when permission is undecided, or Open notification settings after denial. In the foreground, “Myu!” repeats until Close is tapped, with the alarm also displayed over Settings. In the background, the OS delivers a notification with its notification sound; opening it starts the foreground alarm. In-app sound stops while locked or using another app and resumes on return if unacknowledged. Notifications follow device settings, including Silent Mode and Focus. Disabling the alarm or detecting lost purchase entitlement cancels pending and delivered notifications, dismisses the foreground display, and stops playback. Snooze and continuous background playback are not supported.
In-app manual
Open this manual from Settings → Instructions → Manual; no purchase is required. Scroll vertically to read and tap Close to return to Settings. Tap Close in Settings to return to the clock. All ten language editions are stored on the device, using the same language as the app, with no network connection required. Text follows the device’s text size and Light/Dark Mode. Foreground alarms also appear while reading and can be stopped with Close.
Original Version Credits
At the bottom of Settings, open Original Version Credits to view the Macintosh, Windows 3.1, or X11 staff artwork. No purchase or connection is required. The entire image automatically fits the available area in portrait or landscape. No title is shown at the top. Tap Close to return to Settings. Images follow the clock’s color mode, independently of the high-resolution setting. Text within the original artwork is unchanged.
The close button hides about 0.8 seconds after interaction. Tap or drag the image to show it again. It remains visible while VoiceOver is enabled.
Home Screen widget
Add an Emi Clock widget while editing your Home Screen and choose Small or Large. Tap it to open the app’s clock. The widget is free; costumes, color modes, white backgrounds, and high-resolution images follow the same purchase access as the app. Settings, purchases, restoration, and revocation request a refresh, but the OS controls when it appears.
Small (2×2 app icons) and Large (4×4) show the same clock face scaled to their size. All sizes can be added without an in-app purchase. Enable Settings → Widget → Hide corner information in widgets to hide corner text, weather symbols, and arcs in every widget size. This free setting defaults to off. It leaves the app’s corner preferences unchanged; disabling it restores the information. The OS may delay applying changes.
On iOS and iPadOS 17, hands show a static snapshot at each widget update. Second-by-second and minute-by-minute hand updates are available on iOS and iPadOS 18 or later. The OS controls actual updates in both cases.
iOS / iPadOS 18: Clock hands use the OS live date display. With Show Seconds enabled, the second hand advances once per second and the hour and minute hands once per minute, rather than sweeping continuously. Seconds pause in reduced luminance and updates remain OS-controlled. Dates, costumes, and corner information are scheduled about every five minutes. Widgets do not animate poses, play sounds, or run alarms. Weather, temperature, and battery use the last values obtained by this device’s app. Weather expires after 30 minutes and battery after 15 minutes, showing unavailable values. Open the app to refresh them. Photo backgrounds are not shared; the previous black/white selection is used. Settings do not sync with Watch or other devices.
Widget costumes use the unmirrored orientation. Minute-by-minute flipping and compression animation are not supported. With automatic switching enabled, hourly costume changes are included in the timeline. Even with “Hourly character change” enabled, the widget’s actual display update may be delayed beyond the hour because the OS controls delivery.
CO2 concentration
In Settings → Information, select CO2 concentration for a corner (full unlock or a 14-day trial required; iOS/iPadOS only). Allow Bluetooth to display a supported BLE sensor’s current ppm and its minimum/maximum received observations over the past 24 hours in the temperature-style meter. Green, yellow, orange and red represent absolute concentration, not a health assessment. Settings → CO2 concentration → Sensor details selects the device and shows its name, measurement time, last receipt, RSSI, transmit power, distance, nominal accuracy and source. Unknown distance/accuracy and estimated/unverified timestamps are identified. Reception normally runs in the foreground; receipt time is used for history when measurement time is absent, and missing samples are not reconstructed. After 15 minutes without reception corners show -- ppm; details keep the last value. History and selection are stored on the device. watchOS does not display received values. The dedicated CO2 widget displays saved received values.
Supported CO2 sensors
The following sensors’ Bluetooth advertisements are supported. Enable advertising on the sensor; pairing is unnecessary. Reception may depend on firmware and advertising settings.
| Sensor (related page) | Requirements |
|---|---|
| UNI-ELECTRONICS Logtta CO2 | Enable beacon mode. |
| SAF Tehnika Aranet4 | Enable Smart Home integrations. |
| SwitchBot Meter Pro CO2 | CO2 model only; ordinary Meter/Meter Pro models are excluded. |
| Qingping Air Monitor Lite (CGDN1) | Bluetooth advertisements must contain CO2. |
| Qingping CO2 & Temp & RH Monitor (CGP22C) | Bluetooth advertisements must contain CO2. |
| INKBIRD IAM-T2 | Bluetooth version only. |
| Govee Smart CO2 Monitor (H5140) | The product link is an Amazon listing. |
| Ruuvi Air | Bluetooth advertisements must contain CO2. |
Change the displayed sensor using the sensor selector in Settings → CO2 concentration → Sensor details. All CO₂ corners show the selected device’s latest reading and its 24-hour minimum/maximum, not an average or combination of devices. Tap the name on the right of Device name to open the identified product’s official page, official support or Amazon listing in the in-app browser. Unidentified products have no name link.
About CO2 concentration, at the bottom of the CO2 concentration settings section, explains ppm, colors and concentration cues, measuring and ventilation, limitations and the app display. The page works offline; opening the English references requires an internet connection. Colors do not guarantee safety or determine infection risk. Web links open in the in-app browser; closing it returns to the previous screen. Device settings actions open the OS settings.
Received data is cached in files on this device by device ID for 24 hours after receipt. Old data is deleted at launch, on receipt, and about once a minute in the foreground; while terminated or suspended, deletion waits until the next launch or return. Remaining latest readings are restored after relaunch, but the OS may remove the cache.
When a new BLE reading reaches 2,500 ppm or higher, local notifications report “Ventilate immediately!” with the device name and concentration, if notifications are allowed. Reception requires a purchase or active trial. Each received sensor is evaluated separately; no repeat notification is sent until that same sensor reports 800 ppm or lower. Suppression survives app restarts and a low reading from another sensor does not reset it. The 2,500 ppm threshold is a precautionary ventilation cue, not a determination of harm or safety. Permission is requested upon the first high reading received in the foreground. Notifications cannot be sent when permission is denied or BLE reception is unavailable. Tap a ventilation notification to open Settings → CO2 concentration → About CO2 concentration.
Trial ends
The CO2 display feature can be tried free for two weeks without an in-app purchase. Agreeing starts a 14-day trial on this device. Previously detected sensors and product links remain available after it ends. After trial expiry, the message “Your trial has ended. Unlock All Features to display CO2. Previously detected sensors and product links remain available.” is displayed.
CO2 widget
Add Emi Clock’s CO2 concentration widget from the Home Screen widget gallery in small (2×2) or medium (4×2) size. It shows the selected sensor’s current reading, name, last receipt time and 24-hour graph. The vertical axis is ppm and the horizontal axis is elapsed time; line color follows concentration. Gaps over 15 minutes are not connected, and the current value becomes -- ppm after more than 15 minutes without reception. Unlock All Features or consent to a 14-day trial in the app to use it. Tapping a widget before the trial starts or after it ends opens app settings. While the widget is installed, opening the app receives sensor data. The widget itself does not receive BLE; it displays history saved by the app. The OS manages refresh timing.
If you have not started the trial, tap Settings → CO2 concentration → Two-week trial in the app, then read and agree to the explanation.
On iOS and iPadOS 26 or later, opening the app with a CO2 widget installed starts a Live Activity to continue reception in the background. Screen-off, system termination and disabled permissions impose limits. Open the app to resume after it ends.
To continue reception in the background on iOS and iPadOS 26 or later, a valid purchase or trial and Bluetooth and Live Activity permissions are required. Screen-off limits reception, including repeated advertisements; uninterrupted reception is not guaranteed. A Live Activity lasts at most eight hours. Dismissal, removal of the widget (when next detected) or loss of access also stops continued reception. The Lock Screen and other presentations show the device name, concentration and last receipt time; concentration is hidden after more than 15 minutes without reception or trial expiry. The OS controls widget refresh timing. iOS/iPadOS 25 and earlier and the compatibility app on Mac receive only in the foreground.
3. Troubleshooting
| Issue | What to check |
|---|---|
| The clock’s time or date differs from the device | Check Clock → Time Zone and select the option to use the device’s time zone. |
| The second hand or pose animation stops | Check the second-hand and animation settings. The second hand and narrowing animation pause when the app is inactive. Reduce Motion also disables the narrowing animation. When the app becomes inactive, the hour and minute hands do not move back from their last active positions; they then advance as the OS updates the display. |
| The costume changes by itself | Turn off Hourly character change. |
| Settings do not appear on another device | Settings do not sync between devices. Configure each device separately. |
4. Privacy Policy
Privacy Policy appears before Credits in Settings. On iPhone and iPad, opening the published page in the in-app browser requires an internet connection.
